Cacao Ceremony

☕ Cacao calls us back to the heart: a ceremony of presence, words, and shared listening.

1 / 6

When the heart asks to be heard.

The purpose of this circle is to open a time for listening: to gather with presence, name the intention each person brings, and care for the words that are shared. We approach cacao as a plant of encounter, from living Indigenous roots and with respect for the community paths that sustain it.

If you feel called, we invite you to sit in circle and try this medicine of the earth with calm, consent, and an awakened heart. We do not promise what the body or spirit should feel: we come to share a jícara, listen to the heart's rhythm, and honor what each person brings.

Resolving Inquiries

Is ceremonial cacao a hallucinogen?

No. Ceremonial cacao does not produce hallucinations. It contains theobromine, phenylethylamine, and serotonin precursors that create a state of gentle emotional openness and presence. Effects begin 20-30 minutes after drinking and last 2-4 hours. The difference from your morning chocolate is the dose, purity, and the intentional container around the experience.

Can I take it if I am on antidepressants or anxiety medication?

This is the most important safety question. Ceremonial doses (40-50 grams) should not be combined with MAOIs or certain SSRIs due to serotonin interaction risk. Also not recommended with blood pressure or heart medications. Tell us exactly what you take before registering — for most people it is completely safe.

How much cacao is used and what will I feel?

Between 40 and 50 grams of pure cacao paste dissolved in warm water — the recognized ceremonial dose. You may feel warmth in the chest, emotions closer to the surface, gentle energy (similar to two strong coffees), and often a state of clarity or release. Nausea is possible on an empty stomach or at higher doses.

What happens during a cacao ceremony?

The ceremony lasts 2-3 hours and includes: intention setting, ritual preparation and tasting of the cacao, guided meditation, live music, free movement or dance, circle sharing, and closing. The cacao is the heart-opening facilitator — the structure around it is what makes it a ceremony rather than just a beverage.

Do I need prior spiritual experience?

No. Cacao ceremonies welcome complete beginners. No specific beliefs are required. Main preparation: light stomach 2-3 hours before, no alcohol or caffeine that day, and arriving with some openness about what you want to explore.

Will I be sober and conscious during the ceremony?

Yes. This ceremony is held to be experienced with presence and clarity. Ceremonial cacao may be part of the experience, but psychedelics and intoxicating substances are not used before, during, or after the ceremony. Before confirming, we explain each element so you can arrive feeling at ease.
